Given the lack of cultural acknowledgement of Christmas here, I was feeling especially homesick when I was assigned to teach Christmas Eve night. I was scheduled to teach on Christmas Day, too, but asked for the day off. The Turks in Kayseri don't much celebrate the beginning of a new year either. I taught on New Year's Eve night, and on New Year's Day.
