Every year on October 29, Turks celebrate the founding of the Turkish Republic and secular democracy in 1923. Like July 4th (Independence Day) in the United States, it's a time for fireworks, parades, and reflection on the state of the nation. Turkey's economy is growing by more than six percent a year -- one of the fastest growth rates in the world -- and it is emerging as a regional superpower. "Turkey has made astonishing progress in the last decade," The Economist observes in a special report, predicting that "by 2050 Turkey's population will have risen to almost 100m. If by then Turkey has managed to get into the EU, it will be its most populous member, far ahead of Germany, which will have a mere 70m people."
