I stumbled across this quote from William Friday, retired president of the University of North Carolina system, in The Washington Post Magazine, 1990, in a piece by Juan Williams on Jesse Helms titled "Southern Gothic." It made me wonder, how much better off are the state's citizens today? "North Carolina is near the bottom of the nation in high school graduates, SAT scores, wages, and job trainng, and among the highest in infant mortality. One million of the seven million people in the state live in poverty. Eight hundred thousand don't have literacy skills. Forty-five percent of our 16-to-45-year-olds have not completed high school requirements..."
